Kaya Palat is a Hindi expression meaning to pivot,

or a reversal of form or character.

The goals of this exhibition were to turn waste into something useful and beautiful, and to turn people’s minds that waste is a concept of convenience, of defeatism, and that more can be made of left over material in the world.

Lighting designs were set within four art installations, each playing with the lens of emotion. The aim was to create concern for the environment and to question our practices with plastic by cultivating sentiments in visitors, positive and negative, about the often overlooked and unlikely material of reclaimed plastic. The emotions desire, anger, sadness, and love were used to convey the affects of plastic on our world. Each installation was coupled with art from Indian artists.

Each jewel fixture is made from the upper part of re-claimed Pepsi bottles. Assembled like jewelry or earrings, plastic components are suspended from one another with metal findings, hooks, and chains

This installation was made from over 1000 bottle threads.

Threads were attached to metal grid using high heat and water.

Bottoms of bottles were stacked to create translucence with blue LED light. The ceiling was compressed to a height of 7′ and paintings were hung below eye level..

Lighting fixture designs: Magazine Lantern and Love Sphere

Magazine lantern is made from 7 Coke bottles, suspended from one another with metal chain. Edges were heat-treated to create a curling effect. The fixture is illuminated using a central rod with strip LEDs mounted to it, creating the spiral effect seen.

Love Sphere utilized geometry from Buckminster Fuller. Made from the tops of 60 small Pepsi Bottles, each are fastened together with dome nuts and threads.
